Racers hangout / Re: Etiquette at RC Excitement
« on: January 26, 2012, 05:55:21 AM »
There are some experienced drivers that need to read the  Race Day Procedure located here: http://rcexcitement.handruin.com/index.php?topic=3629.0

I included the part about putting the car down in the rack. However, the part I want the experienced racers to notice is the part about marshalling. Note that it doesn't say anything about finding a marshal location and stand there with 2 or 3 of your buddies and discuss the previous race, and ignore the race director when he asks you all to split up and find different corners while the race is happening. There are many reasons why the race ran long on Sunday...

Quote
When your race ends.

Pull your car off the track immediately, shut it off, then immediately go out to a marshalling position to marshal the next race.

DO NOT return to your pit, this will just delay the next race.

Marshalling a race.

Watch the track areas near your location, and assist any vehicle that has flipped or become stuck.  Remain alert, and remember to watch your area... not the race!

Do not throw the vehicles; quickly but calmly return the vehicle to approximately where it came off the track in the right direction.  Do not place it in front of on coming traffic.

Marshal as you would want to be marshaled.

After you are done marshalling.

Pick up your car and bring it back to the pits

If you only have one battery cool it down with a fan and as soon as it is cool put it back on the charger

Go over your entire car again to make sure there is nothing broken, and if there is fix it.

WD40 will help remove the water, however, WD40 is not a lubricant as it evaporates. You need an actual oil like thin engine oil or 3 in 1.

For the motor, it sounds like the bearings are in bad need of oil. Any oil will help, try some 3 in 1, a drop on the exposed bearing...

Lipos will have noticeably diminished overall power and length of run time in the cold weather. As an example, an excellent on-road driver used to purchase the small planes from e-flite. One day it was so cold out he got less than a minute run time on a full charge...

Sorry Dave. Just a roadie looking to fill in the locals about the finals, seeing they were back for 2 days and said nothing about their wonderful slip-n-slide experience. Personally, I think I would have hitchhiked with them...

The best thing you can do for him at this point is get him more time. I'd go with another 7.4v Lipo battery for practicing. And I'd put the 8.4v pack away for back yard bashing. The extra speed will only allow him to flip that much faster. The Lipo is what he will be using for racing, he might as well get used to that for speed.

0 - 100 in 4.92 seconds. You wouldn't need a nascar track to see those speeds.

14
Will they be freshening up the track and making any changes or will it be the track in the video. My brother and i will also be attending should be a blast!

See post #6:

Signed up and ready to go. This will be the shakedown race before we head to Florida. I'm sure Heath and his crew will surely put on a great show. I think I will be hitting a club race before as well.

Heath, any tweaking or changes going down before race?

Layout should be the same, may change up the jumps and will be smoothing our some of the worn out spots. We have been playing with wetting the track so the dust is down and the traction has been even better. As you know we are new to the dirt thing, between you Todd and all the other we will be dialed by race day. Thanks for the support!

Do you really want to get into tech-ing equipment at a low level event such as club racing? For club racing, the fast guys will be fast. If you feel the need to cheat, or what you have that is all that you could afford, so be it. It's all good. Here is what you want to know to be in compliance with ROAR, kudo's to Kenny for doing all the leg work on this one:

I would like to thank everyone for the much too kind words. Again this year it wasn't just me, without all the side dishes, this would just be a bunch of lunchmeat in a big fry pot. Without people to eat it, it would be a carpet race and I would have way too much dinner on my plate... I got to taste most of the food brought in, and you all aren't slouches, either. $5 each and I won't tell your significant other;).

Let's hope this kicks off the frozen diff balls series in screaming fashion.

A couple of things to keep in mind, this is something that we do each year on our own (the reason it is not in the race event calendar). I want to thank Todd for not shutting us down (we also feed him - when he gets a chance, inevitably the shop will be super crowded when the food is ready...).

Beverages - the shop has a cooler near the front door filled with a nice variety, for a good price. I recently saw a 20oz bottle of soda going for $2 at a gas station...

So, I will bring in some antibacterial wipes. For those of you looking for something to bring in, paper plates would be great, along with eating utensils. We will also need a method of deploying the goodies that you all bring in. If you need help with this, let me know. I'd rather have that covered instead of scrambling and serving it cold/warm...

I am going to try to time things so that the first bird is ready near 5:00, the second bird should be ready near 6:00. This should allow enough time to eat, for set-up, practice runs, and possibly racing to start at our usual 7:00. ;)

Ok, boys and squirrels (Homage to Matt D), it is that time of year again. It's time that we tempt the gods of the exploding fry pots and try our hands once again at the blessed art of the delectably deliciously fried foul. You all know that Ben Franklin wanted it as our national bird...

Anyway, I promised that we would have it a week earlier this week, as there are a few people that will be going to the USIC in Cleveland this year. It will also hopefully catch you all at a time that you aren't all 'turkeyed out' from the previous day's celebrations and gluttonous activities.

So, here is the deal, it's like a pot-luck dinner. Since I am organizing this mess I get to choose first . Actually, only certain size birds fit in the pot, I will hand pick the birds and properly prep them the day before. I also have the guidance of my brothers (restaurant chefs) to help make sure that I only poison you all only a little... (j/k)

So, here is the official thread... Post away. Please keep it on topic. If I find it not staying on topic, I will feel free to DELETE ALL UNRELATED POSTS!!!

We will need people to fill in the other gaps in the meal. Think of what you usually love to find on your dinner table on turkey day, and make big promises to bring it. You post up first, you get to bring it. This thread is first come first serve... Let's try not to have all desserts, or to only have veggies...

Let's all have a great pre-turkey day turkey day.

Like life, you will get out of racing what you put into it. I race on carpet. I love it. I usually spend more time working on other people's cars than my own. I have a speed spec, hardly put any time into set-up and maintenance. It shows, when Bruce comes with his, I usually have a hard time keeping up.

The guys on the rug you see wrenching all the time, are looking for the very last 10th that the carpet will give up. These are usually the same guys that are willing to travel to national and world champ level races 3 - 4 times a year. They aren't going to back-fill the classes. The same can be said for the off-road guys. If you want to excell at racing, it isn't just hit the switch or reset button. This isn't Nintendo or xbox. The people that put in the time to learn what makes what do what are the guys that will make it to the top.

If your idea of RC is to have fun, pick a surface / division that looks fun to you, and play. If you want to rise to the top, study set-ups and suspension geometry. Make the small/large changes. Read the books and set-up guides, and try things out until you know what makes it tick. A main podium finishes are tough. A main podium finishes at national events are even harder.

Thanks to Axial Racing, we will be giving away an Axial Wraith rock racer kit on Sunday. All you have to do to be entered is be a participant and hug Kevin Hetmanski.

I've already done 1/2 of what's required... now I just need to get entered.

I got you beat, I hugged Kevin (yeah, big mac daddy). That has to be good for the event win...

Also,-- and this may be posted here somewhere-- but it is very confusing as to how everyone knew when to be on the track and when to Marshall. I'm sure it's not difficult, but maybe a posting that explains a-z how these races work would be helpful.

Considering there is no hobby shop on site, it is really close to NYC, and there are no club fees... This is probably what it is going to take to keep a track in NYC area running. I would imagine that any profit will be put into upgrades after it pays for itself. But, that is just my speculation.

I'm sure the people racing rubber tire sedan would be happy to let you race a 27t brushed system while you get the rest of your gear up to spec. They race spec rubber tires (Sweep 32s I believe), which Todd has at the shop for a price that will be hard to beat. Your biggest hurdle will be Lipo power. Your old speed controller will not have a low voltage cut-off. So, when the car slows down, it is time to charge, otherwise you can do irreversible damage to the batteries. You will also need a Lipo charger, as your old charger will not be compatible.

Tire traction compound, the only ones allowed are SXT3.0, Trinity Sticky Fingers, and Corally Jack the Gripper TC-2. Paragon is no longer allowed (unfortunately). Todd sells the Trinity Sticky Fingers at the counter.

As far as 10th pan is concerned, we have a spec class going right now. Tires are lilac (Jaco), team purple (John's BSR) or other World GT spec tires (I don't know what the CRC equivalent is). We are using 21.5 turn motors with spec mode (aka 'blinky') speed controllers, and with single cell lipo batteries. The chassis will have to make weight (1150g). Speed Spec also is limited to using 200 mm GT or sedan bodies like the ones that Todd can get from HPI. If your chassis is an old T-bar car, I'd consider upgrading it before running it, as finding replacement t-bars can be a pain if the car is no longer made.

The good news is that older speed controllers that do not have upgradable firmware are perfect for this class, and can be had pretty cheap. If you can't find a 21.5 for a good price used, it may be a good thing, as fresh motors seem to do well. Personally, I think the old version Novak SS 21.5 seem to have an edge over the new crop of motors. Novak still makes an 21.5 SS combo with a Havoc retails around $150-ish (# nov3036) that would be perfect combo for Speed Spec.

If the weather changes during the day, you should re-tune your engine. Everything that touches the engine will effect it's tuning, including the air that it breathes. There is no reason to change the engine head in this part of the country. The engine heads that come in the box are adequate for cooling the engine.

The majority of the noise from a nitro engine comes from the intake and the exhaust. The exhaust is a tuned pipe that actually effects how the engine runs. People tune engines with the manifold and pipe. This is why good quality pipes are priced $65+ minus the manifold.

You can put an intake muffler on it like the ins air box the on-road cars use. The amount of power you lose is minimal, and it cuts about 5 - 10 dB. You could also try a different pipe, but remember, the pipe defines how the engine runs...

Or, convert it to electric as clinton mentioned.

« on: June 21, 2011, 03:53:03 AM »
You asked what we were running, that is what is in my car. Not how to get into racing 12th cheap. If I told you that, and you looked in my car on Friday night, you would wonder why I was lying to you.

For a motor, I have been running Speed Passions and Duos.

Chassis from most mfgs will cost about the same, there isn't much room for margin. You could go used. Just keep in mind what we have for support around here. Servos you can use the JR z3650, the Futaba 9601, KO PDS949 or PDS947 (but that ain't cheep). Because in 12th scale we are running 17.5 'blinky mode', you can run any speed controller that doesn't advance the timing, or can have the timing locked into the spec mode. Tires and bodies are a wearable item, use the ones you wish to. Keep the offset in mind, as it varies from rim to rim. Motors are a personal choice. I have liked Speed Passions since the first time I used them, however, the new D3s and the older D2s are fast as were the Duos. LRP motors are showing up at more races. I would save the Vipers and Tekins for off-road, they seem to like it there best. Novak motors are awesome out of the box, just don't slip up on the gearing. Batteries, as long as the lipo is in decent condition, you will do fine. They do degrade over time. You will go through more receiver packs than main packs, though.

The most expense in 12th will be tires then bodies, then bearings. You will go through far fewer bearings, however, when you need bearings the car will feel like garbage.

63

Getting a car to work on un-prepared asphalt will take a completely different set-up than what you would want to use on the rug. This is the reason why there isn't a definitive answer to your question. However, if you are asking between specific companies, I would say Speed Merchant trumps CRC by a long shot. One reason, this is Speed Merchant's home track, and the support will be at the track every week (well, almost every week), and there is usually someone on the forum that can answer questions...

The cars that race on prepared asphalt, are usually racing on asphalt that is relatively smooth. It's blown off, then they spray traction compound of some sort to the asphalt. Some tracks use grape soda, others use a commercially available compound.

So, if you aren't going to actually race on asphalt, going from the rug, which is high grip, to the unprepared tarmac will yield a car that doesn't steer, and the back end breaks free quickly. Bumps are sure to tear up the bottom of the chassis pretty good, too - unless you add lots of clearance... I'm sure others have done it successfully without making changes. In my shallow mind, carbon fiber chassis and asphalt don't mix.

Are you planning to race on a track on the asphalt? Are you planning to race on the carpet? This could affect the answers you get.

For example, if you aren't planning to race at all, my suggestion would be any of the HPI drift cars, the new Traxxas Rally cars, or just about any new or used sedan. I would only ask one favor, when you come to run on the rug at RCE, clean the car inside and out. The majority of people that use the rug are racers and like a clean rug (it works better when clean).

If you are planning on racing on both asphalt and carpet, you will get a completely different answer... Right now the HPI/Hotbodies TCX, the Associated TC6, and the Xray (whatever rev they are at) are probably the hottest sedans on the market for rubber tire racing.

If you want to mess around on asphalt, but get serious on carpet, I highly suggest checking into a Speed Spec for the rug, and find any used sedan or maybe the Traxxas Rally cars to mess around with on the asphalt... Neither cars will break the bank, and Speed Spec is the most popular class on the rug on Friday nights. So, there will be plenty of support.

72
I had a competition to go to this past weekend. However, I am in this week. I will have my Speed Spec and my 12th scale (and mini if there are any kicking around).

On Road Carpet / Re: Some are looking tO bump up to world gt
« on: March 01, 2011, 08:27:51 AM »
There are people racing in Speed Spec class, which is limited to 21.5 motors, that have world gt chassis. Some of these drivers want to step it up and race the actual world gt class. Nationally and locally (when we race) world gt uses 13.5 motors. The noobs that want to try out the actual GT class only want to add a little speed and go to 17.5 motors. Aside from the fact that they already have the 17.5 motors in hand.

The only objection I can think of would be the closing rate of those that have been racing world gt with 13.5 motors.

I personally will not put a 17.5 motor in my GT. Here's why; the feel and tuning of the chassis changes the faster the car goes. So, instead of working with what I would be racing on the national level, I would be changing the tuning of the chassis to suit the different motor characteristics. Is it a bad thing? No. Just a re-tuning thing. I'd rather show up at the track, throw down a car that I believe in, instead of show up, re-tune the car for the flavor of the night motor, and have to worry about gearing etc, and missing the first round of quals because of all the adjustments...

However, if you want to start with a higher wind motor, knock yourselves out. I do think there a bunch of people in Speed Spec ready to turn the wick up... A LITTLE. The rest need more time; 1. figuring out how to get around the track without hitting the walls, and driving freight train style without taking each other out.

How to know if you aren't ready? Look at the fastest lap, top 5 average, top 10 average, and top xx average. When the averages vary less than say 2 seconds from top 5 average to top 20 average, you MAY be ready for something faster. I reserve the right to change that time deviation...

If they use the method that Scotty used in Vegas, your 3 fastest consecutive laps will seed you in the qualifiers. Believe me when I say that it is awesome to see nobody 'sandbagging' in practice. The other thing it did was to better group the different speed drivers together. The only people that got 'screwed' were those that had bad practice runs, arrived late, etc... Yes, I know that Scotty is not calling the electric - at least that is what was posted earlier.

I don't know about you, Adam, but I wouldn't want a less experienced driver crashing in front of me when I'm on a run.

There are a few slight changes in the menus, not drastic. The backlighted display is a really nice feature, as is the drop-down for the wheel. The wheel drop-down is not angle-able like the KO, and if you don't like the wheel dropped, it comes with the standard extension. The other nice feature is it comes with the fat grip and the original grip, the fat grip is installed. The refresh rate is doubled over the DX3R, however, if your electronics aren't fast enough, you probably will not notice. The other feature is the SD card reader packed behind the grip. This allows you to save models and possibly update the firmware in the future(?)... I suggested the firmware update thing while talking to Sonny Brown, however, he wouldn't confirm, only smirked at the notion...

These are the things that I remember from Snowbirds, I'm sure there is more. Big thing is, the DX3R is now discontinued, and the Pro is the only choice from Spektrum in that performance level.
